Nice boat laid out pretty well for the size. The rear livewell is a little small (I plan on catching big fish!), but very useable. Tilt control up front, on the motor and on the throttle is very nice. Dual consoles is the only way to go. The passenger console is big enough to store the porta-potty under and still have plenty of foot room. The 20qt cooler is a nice bonus. The standard Evinrude trolling motor needs to be on the highest setting if there is any wind at all, otherwise it is suited just right for this size boat. There is some dead space at the front of the hull, which could have been opened up for more storage, but a boat this size and marketed in this price range isn't going to have all the bells and whistles as larger boats.

I think Stratos is right on target with this size boat (even though it's ten years old), and judging by what I see in the 2007 brochure many of the same features (and more) are in the new models. I would definitely buy a new Stratos today if I was in the market.

I had a 1994 Stratus 270 before I bought this new boat last year. The 270 never went back to the dealer because it was a great boat.
They following is what I don't like about the new 294XL.
1. The Minn Kota 70 LB thrust was too weak for fishing tidal water. The dealer did put a 80 lb thrust Minn Kota which was strong enough, but I don't like the soft start.
2. The left rod locker will not open with the 42" shaft Minn Kota in the stowed position.
3. The on board battery charger is 2 bank in lieu of the 3 bank.
4. The drain plug for the bilge is in front of the rear cross piece of the trailer making it very hard to get to.
5. The rear stowage compartments are tiny.
6. I had to install a pump to pump out live well to get water for filling weigh in bag. Drain for live well is manual and hard to fill from top of live wells because of divider.
7. Fulton trailer winch handle lasted about months. I was on my second one when I replaced it with a Shelby winch. Fulton has a safety handle which will wallow out if you put too much tension on it.
Other than the above problems I like the boat fine.

This is a great little boat but it does have some drawbacks. First the good stuff...it's very light and very quick even with a 70hp motor. The 17p is really too small unless I'm REALLY loaded, otherwise I have to throttle back to keep the RPMs in a safe range. The hull lifts with little trouble and the transom is built in a way that doesn't require a jackplate. Now for the bad...the livewell is just plain too small. It works great and I like the setup but it's just not big enough. Also the front deck is too small and there isn't a lot of storage even though there is plenty of areas where you can add storage (under the front deck) The rod box is perfect and I can put a 7+ rod in there with no trouble at all. Overall this is the perfect boat for someone who fishes alone on a regular basis or doesn't hit really big lakes all that often. I've had no trouble on some pretty big lakes but it's a drivers boat so you have to be careful.

Added alot of upgrades to this model: Dual console, 3 bank Charger, 80# lift assist Minn Kota TM, dual pro poles, am/fm CD stero, 8" vs. 6" jack plate, Keelshield, and 28p Raker vs. 26 Raker. Boat has run 78.6 gps off the lot. One of the dislikes I have on this boat is the livewell system set up. Its way to complicated. After coming out of a Triton where there are only switches to do the job, Stratos has cables and switchs but I got used to all the settings you need to do to make it all work. The only other gripe I have is the foward deck lids and how they are cut out and come together. Some are uneven and don't look quite right. I love the ride of this boat, its quick and handles rough water pretty well. With this boat I'm not the last one to the fishing hole. One of the big plus's of this boat is the recessed TM tray. I have back problems and have had to use a pro pole all the time. I have not had to use the pro pole yet! I will purchase another one in the future.
